The 5th annual Redhawk Basketball Showcase brought some of the best teams in the state to Union High School on Saturday, February 2. Featuring four of the top teams in the state, as well as Michigan’s top three players in the state, these guys brought the heat that ended the polar vortex.
I won’t spend time recapping the games (you can see that here), but this was a long, fun day watching some really outstanding athletes. I captured some some exciting moments and unfortunately missed a few too (chalk up the blurry dunks to learning curve). My own highlights of the day include: starting the day off with a game winning shot in overtime, ridiculous shooting talent and ball handling, talent on the floor that felt more like a college matchup, and the final game of the day was my Redhawks team coming out to a packed house chanting their names. About half way through the day, the gym reached capacity and the energy for all the teams was amazing.
Eight hours and two thousand photos later, I could barely get off the gym floor. It was a great event and my heartfelt congratulations go out to Grand Rapids Public Schools, Union High School, the athletic staff and volunteers who offered support to coach Brandoen Guyton for his vision and determination for starting this five years ago. Great job Redhawks!
I shot the whole tournament using my 70-200 lens. The lights in the Union gym are the same we had in 1993 which always creates a situation; I have found shooting at a very high ISO is necessary in order to get decent pictures. The challenge of shooting fast action is compounded by the lighting conditions, that in some cases appear yellow on one side and green on the other.
